It’s a thrilling way to catch grouper and a whole different experience than traditional deep-dropping for gags. The bite couldn’t be better than it is right now and the fish are unusually large this year. We go armed with what it takes, be it live bait, dead bait or oversized diving plugs. Lately the plugs have been working best and actually, it’s a lot more fun casting and cranking for the grouper. It’s something everyone should do at least once.

We’re fishing northwest of Hudson, Fl., and because we’re working so shallow, the long, bumpy boat rides are avoided. We get to our fish fast and make quick work of them, as they are feeding heavily now to fatten up for winter
